The US Quadrennial Defense Review report sees the need for more diverse air assets over the next decade. With counter-insurgency conflicts likely to prevail, is recommended extra rotary-wing, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and counter-improved explosive device (IED) assets. The Army and US Special Operations Command will gain a company of upgraded cargo helicopters, most likely Boeing’s MH-47G, to add to the Army’s Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The US Air Force is to get 16 new C-130Js converted into the gunship configuration with older model AC-130 being retired. The fleet will be enlarged from 25 to 33 aircraft. For counter-IED operations, one additional C-130 aircraft outfitted in the Early Warning configuration will be provided and the Navy will procure additional E/A-18G Growlers with the Marine Corps extending the service life of its fleet of EA-6B Prowlers.
In its FY 2010 plan, the DoD made a commitment to grow to a capacity of 50 sustained orbits of the Predator/Reaper UAS by FY 2011, and will continue to expand the force to 65 orbits by FY 2015.
