Following protracted delays in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme, the US Air Force’s training wing, the 33rd Fighter Wing (FW) at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, has begun to receive F-16 Falcon fighters so training for the F-35 can be made ‘more realistic’.
The first F-16 arrived on January 13 from the 56th FW, normally based at Luke AFB in Arizona. The 33rd FW is to borrow four aircraft to help establish a ‘battle rhythm’ as the wing stands up the first joint training centre for the F-35.
The F-16’s flying characteristics are similar to the F-35, says the Air Force. It will help pilots transition to a single-engine fighter. The initial cadre of F-35 instructor pilots will fly the F-16s for about a year to validate processes and warm up the ramp, which has been empty since the wing was established in October 2009 to prepare for the arrival of F-35
