Two US Air Force Reserve C-130Hs equipped with aerial spraying equipment have deployed to the Gulf of Mexico to help spray dispersant on the oil slick threatening the coast after BP's Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank.
The C-130s, assigned to the 757th Airlift Squadron at Youngstown ARS, Ohio, are equipped with the Modular Aerial Spray System. This is normally used to spray pesticides to control insects, but in the early 1990s demonstrated the ability to spray dispersant on oil slicks.
The Pentagon has been asked also whether C-130s equipped for firefighting could be used to spray the slick.
