Sus fuerzas navales están preparadas para realizar ataques por sorpresa, disponiendo de unos 420 buques, 70 de ellos submarinos.
Su fuerza aérea dispone de unos 820 aviones, 170 aviones de entrenamiento y unos 300 helicopteros.

North Korea has increased the number of its special warfare forces and battle tanks over the last two years as part of efforts to improve both conventional and asymmetrical military capabilities against South Korea, according to Seoul's latest defense white paper.
It is also thought that the North has obtained about 40 kilograms of plutonium after reprocessing spent fuel rods four times until 2009.
The North currently has about 8,500 field guns, 5,100 multiple rocket launchers and some 100 surface-to-surface guided weapons.
About 60 percent of the North's naval forces are forward-deployed south of Pyongyang and Wonsan, which enables them to launch a surprise attack on the South at anytime, it adds.
The North's navy has about 420 combat warships, 260 amphibious landing vessels, 30 support vessels and 70 submarines.
Its air force has about 820 combat aircraft and 170 trainer planes. The North Korean military also has about 300 helicopters and 7.7 million reserve forces.
