A Harrier GR9 based at RAF Cottesmore in Rutland has been painted in a gloss camouflage ‘retro’ scheme to mark the imminent retirement of the aircraft from Royal Air Force service.
The scheme echoes that applied to the Harrier GR1 when it entered service at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire in 1969. The aircraft is set to be the centrepiece of a final salute to the Harrier at Cottesmore on Wednesday and is planned to lead a 16-aircraft formation that will fly over seven military airfields, the town centres of Stamford and Oakham and Lincoln Cathedral before landing back at RAF Cottesmore for the last time.
