A U-2 launched from Beale Air Force Base Jan. 27 to provide critical imagery support in the ongoing humanitarian relief mission in Haiti. The aircraft, temporarily flown out of Robins AFB, Ga., will be used to gather high-quality imagery, broad area shots, which will eliminate the need to patch together smaller images gathered by other intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets currently operating in the Haiti. "The capabilities of the U-2, with the optical bar camera provide superior imagery that is unsurpassed in many of the reconnaissance platforms flying today", said official from the 99th Reconnaissance Squadron. "It's also going to fill in the pieces that were not found earlier by other platforms."
The images provided by the U-2 will give decision makers on the ground a broad picture when deciding on how to get help to those who need it the most.
"Some of the imagery we will be providing will be able to show them what roads will be usable so that they can find what areas are accessible on the ground via vehicles," official said. "Also, they will be able to prioritize to see what type of areas have been hit the hardest and hopefully this will expedite how quickly they can get in and out of the worst areas in Haiti."

C-130 DE TAWAN AUTORIZADO A ATERRIZAR EN ESTADOS UNIDOS POR PRIMERA VEZ EN 30 AÑOS/TAIWAN AIR FORCE C-130 TRANSITS US ON WAY TO HAITI

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2010/01/22/2003464114 For the first time in 30 years, a Taiwanese military plane has been allowed to land in the United States. Washington allowed the C-130 to land for refueling while on its way carrying relief supplies to Haiti. USAF officer said “We have approved Taiwan’s request for a cargo airplane to refuel in the US and in US territories in order to reach Haiti as quickly as possible. We are doing possible to ensure needed emergency supplies reach Haiti expeditiously. This is part of that effort”. Asked if Washington had discussed the issue with Beijing prior to giving the green light, Kavanagh told Agence France Presse “there is no need” as the approval was given on humanitarian grounds. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu reacted to the news by saying: “We oppose any government, including the United States, from having any official contact with Taiwan.”The Chinese-language United Daily News identified the aircraft as a C-130 air force transport plane and said the stop was for refueling.

AYUDA NORTEAMERICANA A HAITI/US SUPPORT TO HAITI

The Air Force airdropped more than 14,000 packaged meals and water supplies into Haiti’s capital Monday in an attempt to overcome severe supply bottlenecks, including a lack of fuel, that are still plaguing relief efforts
The Pentagon had said previously it was hesitant to use airdrops because it could start riots among Haitians suffering from hunger since last week’s earthquake.
“There is no other way” to effectively distribute aid right now, said Agron Ferati of International Medical Corps, a medical aid agency.

Air Force brings order to chaotic air traffic
When Air Force special operations controllers stepped off a transport plane Wednesday night at Haiti’s main airport, they found chaos.
One day after the earthquake struck, relief planes were coming in from all directions, landing on a first-come-first-served basis and getting too close to one another on the ground. Nobody was coordinating. Aid wasn’t moving.
The air-traffic control tower was damaged and unsafe. So Tech. Sgt. Chris Grove, whose expertise extends to calling in airstrikes from the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, brought his squad to a spot near the runway and set up what would become an air-traffic control center. They went to talk to pilots on the ground.
“We told them, hey, we’re Air Force combat controllers. We’re taking over the airfield,” Grove said. From a dirt patch, two young American sergeants began directing air traffic for one of the largest humanitarian operations in history.
