Saab and Embraer sign F-X2 programme management MoU

Saab and Embraer have signed a memorandum of understanding which formally underpins their joint management of the production and delivery of Gripen NG multi-role fighter aircraft to meet the requirements of the Brazilian F-X2 programme.
The announcement of the MoU came on 11 July.
Embraer will co-ordinate all development and production activities in Brazil on behalf of Saab and will participate in systems development, integration, flight tests, final assembly, and deliveries."

France loses out on Brazil jets deal

France will lose out in its bid to win a multibillion-dollar fighter jet contract with Brazil.
The newspaper set France's $4 billion proposal for 36 Rafale fighter jets, from a consortium led by French giant Dassault, will be shot down for cost reason. It did not say who would be the likely winner of the highly prized contract.
The French bid is up against Boeing's F/A-18 Super Hornet and the Gripen, made by Sweden's Saab, for its FX-2 program.
With Brazil seeking to retire its Mirage 2000 jets at the end of the year, France has been pushing the merits of the Rafale.

Brazil builds Russian defense ties with Pantsir S1 missile deal

Brazilian officials said they expect to sign a contract by the middle of 2014 for short- to medium-range surface-to-air Pantsir S1 missile batteries and Igla-S shoulder-held missiles.
In December, Brazil bought 12 Mi-35 attack helicopters in its first purchase from Russia of military hardware. The rising Latin American power has traditionally obtained its weapons from the United States and Europe.
Brazil's Air Force has been looking for a decade to buy 36 fourth-generation jets to replace its aging fighter fleet, but Russia's Sukhoi Su-35 is not currently in the running for the contract worth more than $4 billion.
The selection process is already underway and will not be reopened but it's hoped President Dilma Rousseff will decide "soon" between Boeing Co.'s F-18 Super Hornet, the Rafale made France's Dassault Aviation SA and the Gripen offered by Sweden's Saab AB.
The purchase of anti-aircraft batteries is part of Brazil's effort to beef up air defenses ahead of global sports events the South American nation is preparing to host, next year's soccer World Cup, and Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

A Russian military delegation about to visit Brazil will offer joint development of a fifth-generation combat aircraft “of the type” of its own most newest fighter to Brazilian defense officials.
The proposal appears to be in support of an unsolicited offer by Russia’s combat aircraft maker Sukhoi of its Su-35 fighter, that has been struck off Brazil’s shortlist for its air force’s F-X2 tender for the purchase of 36 fighter jets. Russia is still hoping to sell the Su-35s or similar aircraft to Brazil outside the framework of that tender, sweetening the deal with the new proposal.

Brazil is closer to choosing Boeing Co.'s F-18 for one of the developing world's most sought-after defense contracts after U.S. Vice President Joe Biden addressed the government's main misgivings during a visit to Brasilia, officials told Reuters.
Biden met with President Dilma Rousseff on Friday and assured her that the U.S. Congress was likely to respect Boeing's agreement to transfer sensitive technology to Brazil as part of the deal, three officials who were present said on condition of anonymity.
The deal will involve 36 jets worth about $4 billion, with probable follow-up orders that would greatly increase the value of the contract over time. That makes it a critical prize for defense companies at a moment when the United States and many European countries are tightening military budgets.
The other finalists are France's Dassault Aviation SA and Sweden's Saab AB .
Rousseff has not made her final decision, and the timing for an announcement remains unclear, the officials stressed.

Brazil's long-delayed FX-2 fighter purchase program has been pushed back again, leaving all three leading contractors guessing the outcome, whenever it happens.
Boeing's F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet, French manufacturer Dassault's Rafale and Swedish company Saab's JAS-39 Gripen NG are in the race to win the contract to supply Brazil with up to 36 jets.
Brazil's air force is operating a mixed fleet of aging aircraft, including the French Mirage, and many of the jets have gone through repeated upgrades and some have been grounded.
