US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets, operating from the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, successfully intercepted and neutralized a Houthi rebel attack in the Red Sea.

On Wednesday 10th, a total of 18 drones, two cruise missiles, and an anti-ship missile were downed by the F/A-18 Super Hornets from the Dwight D. Eisenhower, alongside the destroyers Gravely, Mason, Laboon, and the British warship HMS Diamond. The Houthi rebels, based in Yemen, targeted ships in the Red Sea with this barrage, although no damage was reported.

This incident marks the 26th attack by Houthi rebels on commercial shipping routes in the Red Sea since November 19, according to the US Central Command. The attack occurred off the Yemeni port cities of Hodeida and Mokha. Vessels in the area were cautioned to proceed at maximum speed and transit with caution, reporting any suspicious activity, as advised by the UK Marine Trade Operations.

While the Houthi rebels did not formally claim responsibility for the attacks, anonymous Houthi military officials indicated that their forces had "targeted a ship linked to Israel in the Red Sea."

These assaults have consistently targeted ships in the Red Sea, a critical passage connecting the Middle East and Asia to Europe via the Suez Canal, including the narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The strait, only 29 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, handles a substantial portion of global maritime trade, with nearly 10% of all oil traded at sea passing through it, representing an estimated $1 trillion in goods annually.

To counter these attacks, a US-led coalition of nations has been actively patrolling the Red Sea. Despite warnings from the US, there has been no widespread retaliatory strike, although American troops were involved in a previous incident where Houthi vessels were sunk, and 10 rebel fighters were killed.

Simultaneously, a tentative cease-fire between the Houthi rebels and a Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s exiled government has held for months. The concern now is that any escalation in sea conflict or potential reprisal from Western forces could reignite tensions in Yemen, the poorest nation in the Arab world, and jeopardize the fragile cease-fire.

US Navy Vessel Shoots Down Another Drone in Red Sea

The USS Mason intercepted and brought down an aerial drone on Wednesday, a drone that authorities linked to Houthi rebels in Yemen with ties to Iran. The USS Mason intercepted and brought down an aerial drone on Wednesday, a drone that authorities linked to Houthi rebels in Yemen with ties to Iran. This event marks the most recent instance of a U.S. warship thwarting drone and missile threats in the Middle East over the past few weeks.

“We can confirm the USS Mason shot down an uncrewed aerial vehicle originating from Houthi controlled areas of Yemen (...) Dec. 6 in the southern Red Sea,” a military official granted anonymity said in an email to Navy Times. “(...) no damage or injury to U.S. equipment or personnel.”

As with other recent instances of Navy ships shooting down air drones, the official said the drone was headed toward the Mason but that its intended target is unclear.

The incident comes days after Navy destroyer USS Carney shot down multiple air drones Sunday as several merchant ships came under attack by Houthis in Yemen missiles fired from Houthi rebel-controlled areas of Yemen, as well as continued attacks on U.S. ground forces in Iraq and Syria following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.

Late last month, the Pentagon said that Houthis fired at least one ballistic missile in the general direction of the Mason in the Gulf of Aden as it responded to a distress call from the Israeli-linked commercial vessel Central Park.

Last month, a group of five armed individuals from Somalia boarded the Central Park, aiming to seize control of the vessel and gain entry to the crew cabin. The crew of the commercial ship secured themselves "within a secure refuge," as per the statement.

Upon the arrival of the Mason following the distress signal, the armed individuals departed the location. Nevertheless, a search and seizure team dispatched by the Mason apprehended them while aboard the ship.

The USS Mason operates within the carrier strike group led by the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, which left Norfolk, Virginia, in October for its planned mission. Last month, the carrier group navigated through the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf.

Spain cancels bombs sale to Saudi Arabia amid Yemen concerns

Spain said Tuesday it has canceled the delivery of 400 laser-guided bombs purchased by Saudi Arabia, amid fears that the weapons could be used against Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The arms deal was originally signed in 2015 under Spain’s former conservative government, but the new center-left administration of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez plans to return the €9.2 million (U.S. $10.7 million) already paid by the Saudis, Cadena SER radio reported Tuesday.
A Defence Ministry spokeswoman confirmed the report, but declined to elaborate. She was not authorized to be identified in media reports.
Sanchez's Socialist party had promised to revise the country's arms deals before the new prime minister ousted his predecessor, Mariano Rajoy, in a parliamentary vote in June.
The Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, visited all four countries in April this year. Two months later, his government signed the purchase of five naval corvettes that a Spanish state-owned military shipbuilder has pledged to deliver for €2 billion. The contract had been in the works for years.
As a longtime commercial ally of Saudi Arabia, Spain is the fourth-largest provider of military equipment and weapons to the Gulf state.

Yemeni Houthi Claim To Have Shoot Down Saudi Eurofighter

Yemeni armed forces said they shot down the a Saudi Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon with a surface-to-air missile as it was flying in the skies over Nihm district east of the Yemeni capital city of Sana’a on Friday evening, Saba news agency reported.
"We have the capacity to develop the Yemeni Air Defense and we are willing to (give) more surprises as long as the aggression continues," the Yemeni military chief, General Ibrahim al-Shami, said on Friday.
The general also confirmed that Yemeni forces are changing their air strategy to counter Riyadh, calling on the Saudi regime to "take these advances" seriously.
The downing of the jet came after Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, said Riyadh’s aggression against Yemen, which began in March 2015, will continue.
Since March 25, 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Iran Intercepts Cargo Ship, US Moves to Respond

Iranian vessels fired upon a cargo ship flagged to the Marshall Islands Tuesday morning, forcing the ship to travel deeper into Iranian waters — and setting off another round of tensions between Iran and the US.
Iranian patrol vessels intercepted the shipping vessel Maersk Tigris around 5 a.m. Washington time. At that time, the vessels ordered the ship to travel deeper into Iranian waters. It is not clear if the Maersk had inadvertently traveled into Iranian territory.
When the Maersk did not respond immediately, the Iranian vessels fired shots across the bow of the cargo ship, which then complied with the order. The Iranian forces then boarded the vessel.
The ship is now located in the "vicinity" of Larak Island, in the Strait of Hormuz. The ship was traveling from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia to Jebel Ali in the UAE.
Although the Marshall Islands are a sovereign nation, the US has "full authority and responsibility for security and defense" of the islands, according to a State Department fact sheet. That puts a US response in play in what represents an escalation of the standoff between Iran and the US.
After receiving a distress signal from the cargo ship, Naval Forces Central Command dispatched the destroyer Farragut to proceed at best speed to the location of the Maersk and has sent a single maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft to observe the situation.
The past week has seen a spike in tensions between the two countries after US Navy ships began shadowing a convoy of Iranian cargo ships that the Pentagon believed may be carrying weapons to aid militant forces in Yemen.
That situation dispersed last week when the Iranian convoy turned away from Yemen.

Saudi Arabia ends air campaign in Yemen

Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday it was ending a month-long campaign of air strikes against the Houthi rebels who seized large areas of Yemen and said it would back a political solution to bring peace to its war-ravaged neighbor.
Iran, which has supported the fellow Shi'ite Houthis, welcomed the ceasefire.
"Operation Decisive Storm has achieved its goals ...(including) removing the threat to Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries, especially in terms of heavy weapons," said a statement carried by Saudi state news agency SPA.

USS Theodore Roosvelt strike group ready to block Iranian ships off Yemen

The aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and members of its strike group are heading toward the waters off Yemen to conduct maritime security operations.
The TR, along with cruiser Normandy, passed through the the Strait of Hormuz Sunday to join up with U.S. maritime security forces in the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb, said Cmdr. Kevin Stephens.
The TR is tracking a convoy of Iranian vessels headed to the Gulf of Aden and will be prepared to block them from delivering arms to the Houthi rebels. However, Stevens said none of the U.S. vessels have been tasked to intercept the Iranian vessels as of Monday.
The carrier, with nine embarked squadrons, and cruiser met up with about half a dozen U.S. ships already operating in the area, including the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima , the amphibious transport dock New York, the dock landing Fort McHenry, the mine countermeasures ships Dextrous and Sentry, and the destroyers Forrest Sherman and Winston Churchill, members of TR's carrier strike group.
The Navy has recently increased its presence in the region as Houthi rebels continue to fight against the government in that country, according to a Navy release Monday.
The TR and its strike group recently entered 5th Fleet as part of an eight-month deployment.
The TR CSG brings deadly new capabilitieswith the first deployment for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, and extensive upgrades to the Normandy that enable the strike group to fire at targets with longer range missiles.

US Clears Egypt Hellfire Buy Amidst Yemen Strikes

An Egyptian procurement of 356 AGM-114K/R3 Hellfire II missiles has been cleared by the US State Department, the first new procurement since the White House lifted a freeze on weapon sales to that nation.
The sale also comes as Egypt takes part in anti-militant operations in Yemen, which the US is indirectly aiding with logistical support.
If the sale is given the OK by Congress, it would represent the first sale of the R model of Hellfire to Egypt. Egyptian military forces currently operate the F and K variants.
As soon as the freeze ended, a held-up sale of 12 F-16 aircraft, 20 Harpoon missiles and up to 125 M1A1 Abrams tank kits was cleared.

Operation Decisive Storm-Air Power Over Yemen

After Houthi rebels toppled the Yemeni government causing president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to flee to Aden earlier this month, a Saudi-led coalition of Middle Eastern states launched an air campaign to intervene.
Operation Decisive Storm began on March 26 and has resulted in one of the most extraordinary gatherings of air power seen in recent years, with air arms from the Gulf Cooperation Council nations, except Oman, joined by aircraft from Morocco, Egypt and Sudan, as well as Jordan.
The numbers of aircraft involved are quite extraordinary but perhaps illustrate the concern that Saudi Arabia and its neighbors have for the spread of the Houthi insurgency in the south of the Arabia peninsula.
Saudi Arabia is supporting the operation with 100 aircraft that are likely to include fighters and support aircraft.
Bahrain has deployed between eight and 12 of its F-16s, Qatar has sent 10 of its 12 Mirage 2000s. The United Arab Emirates has deployed 30 aircraft, while Morocco and Jordan have each deployed six F-16s. Jordan’s participation is particularly noteworthy given its heavy involvement in operations against the Islamic State insurgency in Iraq and Syria. Reports state that Kuwait has sent 15 F/A-18 Hornets.
Egypt’s aerial contribution is unclear, but its neighbor Sudan is perhaps the most surprising of the participants, bringing a trio of Sukhoi Su-24 Fencers.
How big a role the Su-24s will play remains to be determined, particularly as the aircraft are not compatible with Western weapons stockpiled at Saudi air bases, forcing the Sudanese to transport bombs and missiles to Saudi Arabia where the aircraft have been forward-based for the campaign.
Pakistan says it is examining a request from Riyadh to join the coalition.

USA Clears Sale of 12 F-16 To Egypt

The White House lifted an executive hold on weapon sales to Egypt Tuesday, as part of a broader attempt to "modernize" the military relationship between the two countries.
President Obama informed Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of the change in the administration's posture. The loosening of restrictions comes just days after Egypt began bombing operations against militants in Yemen.
Since a military coup in October 2013, the White House has frozen military sales to Egypt in hopes it would force democratic reforms in the nation.
In the short term, the US will clear the sale of 12 F-16 aircraft, 20 Harpoon missiles and up to 125 M1A1 Abrams tank kits, which had been held up.

Saudi Arabia Launches Air Campaign in Yemen

Saudi Arabia waged early Thursday “Operation Decisive Storm” against the Houthi coup in Yemen and in support of legitimate President.
A Saudi air campaign was launched overnight which has already resulted in the elimination of several Houthi leaders.
Yemen air space is currently under full control of the Saudi Royal Air Force.
As the operation continues, a coalition of all GCC countries, barring Oman, is taking part in the campaign, including Sudan, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Pakistan.
Saudi Arabia has deployed 100 fighter jets, 150,000 soldiers and other navy units.
The White House has voiced support for the campaign against the Houthis. Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Washington Adel al-Jubeir announced the kingdom had launched a military operation involving air strikes in Yemen against Houthi fighters who have tightened their grip on the southern city of Aden where Hadi had taken refuge.

RAAF Wants to Buy Reaper UAV

The RAAF Chief says he would like Australia to buy armed Reaper drones – the kind used by the US to kill insurgents in Afghanistan – as soon as five years from now.
The drones, can carry out surveillance missions and can also carry weapons such as Hellfire missiles.
The purchase could happen within five years.
The Pentagon and Central Intelligence Agency’s drone campaigns in the Middle East and South Asia have attracted controversy both in the region and in the US. Critics say the strikes have killed too many civilians and constitute remote-controlled killing often in areas that are not actually war zones. While the numbers are unclear, the US Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which tracks media reports of drone strikes, says there were more than 1000 drone strikes in Afghanistan from 2008 to 2012. The bureau also says up to 4225 people including 1042 civilians have been killed by drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia.
The Reaper is a larger and more modern drone than the earlier Predator.

US relocates drones airfield after Djibouti crashes

The Pentagon is shifting its drone operations from a US base in Djibouti to a more remote airfield after local officials voiced concern about possible collisions with commercial aircraft.
"There was a concern over what would happen if a MQ-1 (Predator drone) obstructed a runway, and that it would have a significant impact on commercial air operations," said an official.
After the attacks of September 11 2001, Camp Lemonnier -- located next to the Djibouti international airport -- took on crucial strategic importance for Washington as a site for stationing special operations forces and drones for assaults on Al-Qaeda militants in Yemen and Islamist Shabab forces in Somalia.

Yemen receives its first US reconnaissance aircraft to aid in fight against Al Qaeda

Yemen's defense minister says his country has received two U.S. reconnaissance airplanes, its first delivery of the aircraft as part of an aid package to help fight terrorism.
The training and aircraft come after Washington relaunched efforts to aid the struggling nation. U.S. defense officials say Washington has delivered more than a dozen helicopters to the Yemeni military this year.
During his recent visit to Washington, Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi asked President Barack Obama to provide his country with drone technology. Washington's drone war in Yemen has expanded under Obama, killing hundreds of alleged militants.

U.S. documents detail al-Qaeda’s efforts to fight back against drones

Al-Qaeda’s leadership has assigned cells of engineers to find ways to shoot down, jam or remotely hijack U.S. drones, hoping to exploit the technological vulnerabilities of a weapons system that has inflicted huge losses upon the terrorist network, according to top-secret U.S. intelligence documents.
Although there is no evidence that al-Qaeda has forced a drone crash or interfered with flight operations, U.S. intelligence officials have closely tracked the group’s persistent efforts to develop a counterdrone strategy since 2010.
Al-Qaeda commanders are hoping a technological breakthrough can curb the U.S. drone campaign, which has killed an estimated 3,000 people over the past decade. The airstrikes have forced al-Qaeda operatives and other militants to take extreme measures to limit their movements in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and other places.
