The prospective Dutch coalition government has confirmed its intention to continue with the F-35 programme with the announcement of a second test aircraft to be bought in 2011 for the Initial Operational Test & Evaluation phase.
However the coalition is postponing any decision on the F-16 replacement programme until after the next general election, due in 2014 and says the number of aircraft bought “would appear not to be 85, as originally planned, but 58 as previously planned for procurement as ‘Batch 1’.”
At present the Royal Netherlands Air Force (KLu) has five front-line squadrons of F-16s, but this is likely to be reduced with a smaller buy of F-35s.
