Russia Risks its A-50 AEW Fleet Flying Near Ukraine Borders Due to Increasing Losses, Western Fighter Threat, and S-400 Weakness

The UK MoD Defence Intelligence reported that Russia's Aerospace Forces (VKS) are increasingly deploying their most advanced Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft, the Beriev A-50U, to identify enemy airborne targets in Ukrainian airspace. The A-50U, with its advanced radar system, can detect and track enemy aircraft from longer distances due to its altitude advantage, aiding the VKS in battle management and providing targeting coordinates for specific missions.

Amid escalating conflict in Ukraine, the A-50U has been crucial in managing VKS fighter aircraft and supporting the targeting of hypersonic missiles. However, the deployment of these advanced aircraft poses a risk, given their limited numbers and the potential difficulty of replacement if lost in action.

The move to deploy these aircraft closer to the front lines signifies ongoing challenges faced by the VKS (Russian Air Force), including substantial losses of aircraft, both confirmed and imputed, due to various reasons like combat, accidents, and extended operations. This has led to a change in tactics, with VKS operating further away from potential threats to minimize losses.

The A-50U's increased deployment aims to support VKS operations by enhancing data-sharing capabilities with the modern S-400 air defense system, aiding in extending the engagement range. This joint system improves target tracking and engagement capabilities but also presents vulnerabilities that the Ukrainians may exploit.

Concerns about the introduction of Western fighter aircraft into the conflict zone have driven Russia's strategic decisions. The potential threat posed by these aircraft has heightened worries about additional losses for the VKS and the increased vulnerability of their S-400 units.

The ongoing conflict has forced Russia to make difficult choices, including the relocation of S-400 units from strategic regions to bolster defenses in the Ukraine theatre. The reduction in S-400 numbers signifies the strain on Russia's crucial defense capabilities due to the ongoing conflict and the need to protect key assets.

US F-22s intercept Russian bombers escorted by fighters near Alaska

Two Russian bombers, flanked by a pair of fighter jets, were intercepted by stealth US F-22 aircraft off the coast of Alaska on Wednesday, according to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
The Russian TU-95 Bear bombers and their SU-35 fighter jet escorts stayed in international airspace but did fly as close to 50 miles from Point Hope, Alaska.
In the U.S. Air Force fleet
This is the first time Russian bombers have been accompanied by fighters in these types of flights since 2015, a US official told CNN.
A Russian A-50 Mainstay surveillance plane also later flew into the area but remained in international air space and was not intercepted.
The US military sees these flights as routine and pose no concern, according to the US official.

Russia to develop new AWACS aircraft based on IL-76MD-90A plane

Beriyev Aviation on Friday will receive the first series Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A plane for making an advanced airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft on its base, the plane manufacturer.
The A-100 Premier AWACS aircraft prototype will be made on the Ilyushin aircraft basis in Taganrog (in Russia’s southern Rostov region), the company said.
The manufacturing cycle for one Il-76MD-90A plane is two years and 13 aircraft of the IL-76 family are currently at different stages of manufacture.
The advanced AWACS plane A-100 Premier designed to replace the A-50 aircraft will have an advanced active phase array capable of detecting and tracking airborne and land-based targets.
The Russian Air Force has around 20 A-50 Mainstay AWACS planes, based on the Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. The A-50 is equipped with the large Liana surveillance radar with its antenna in an over-fuselage rotodome and can control up to ten fighter aircraft for either air-to-air intercept or air-to-ground attack missions.

Royal Air Force Typhoons scrambled to Intercept Russian Aircraft during NATO Baltic Air Policing mission

RAF Typhoons were yesterday (Tuesday 17 June) scrambled to intercept multiple Russian aircraft as part of NATO’s ongoing mission to police Baltic airspace.
The Typhoon aircraft, from 3 (Fighter) Squadron, were launched after four separate groups of aircraft were detected by NATO air defences in international airspace near to the Baltic States.
Once airborne, the British jets identified the aircraft as a Russian Tupolev Tu22 ‘Backfire’ bomber, four Sukhoi Su27 ‘Flanker’ fighters, one Beriev A50 ‘Mainstay’ early warning aircraft and an Antonov An26 ‘Curl’ transport aircraft who appeared to be carrying out a variety of routine training. The Russian aircraft were monitored by the RAF Typhoons and escorted on their way.

India To Augment Awacs Fleet

In a bid to boost its aerial surveillance, India will buy six aircraft that can be used for supporting its indigenous Airborne Warning and Control System (Awacs).
Though the type of aircraft hasn’t been specified, India is looking at acquiring a platform that can support an Awacs antenna dome, which is about 10 meters in diameter. The aircraft also should have provisions for the installation of all external and internal elements of the mission systems, the official adds.
Only original aircraft manufacturers are qualified to submit the bids. Also, “the vendors should be willing to support the product for a period not less than 30 years from the date of acceptance of the aircraft,” he says.
In March 2013, Indian Defense Minister said the indigenous development of Awacs was envisioned to be completed in 84 months. The program started in late 2013 and is expected to be completed by around 2020, assuming there are no delays.
IAF currently operates three Awacs platforms: Ilyushin IL-76s upgraded with Israel Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) Phalcon Awacs radar and mission control systems, with a platform designation of A-50EI. The modified IL-76s already serves in Russia as the A-50 Awacs.
India has already activated a follow-on order for two additional A-50EIs from IAI.
According to the defense ministry official, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), which is developing the radars and sensors, is looking at either the Boeing-767 or Airbus A330 as the new platform. However, vendors such as Ilyushin, Antonov, Sukhoi, Bombardier and Saab could also be in the running.
