India Turns to Ex-Ecuador, French and Omani Jaguars to Keep Its Fleet Flying

The SEPECAT Jaguar has long been a workhorse for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Introduced in the late 1970s, this subsonic strike aircraft has performed close air support, deep strike, and reconnaissance roles across decades of operations. Today, the Jaguar remains a critical component of India’s strike capability, even as its airframes age and production lines have long since closed.

Maintaining a fleet of legacy aircraft is never straightforward. India faces the classic challenge of operating a platform for which no new production exists. Engines, landing gear, avionics, and specialized structural components cannot simply be ordered from a manufacturer. To address this, the IAF has relied on a strategy of selective cannibalization from retired airframes, a practice that has become central to sustaining the Jaguar fleet.

Oman has played a pivotal role in this logistics equation. In 2018–2019, the Royal Air Force of Oman retired a number of Jaguars, which India acquired primarily to harvest spare parts. These aircraft were never intended to fly in Indian service; instead, they provide engines, mission avionics, landing gear, and other high-value components that are increasingly difficult to obtain from original suppliers. The Omani airframes effectively extend the operational life of India’s active fleet, allowing the IAF to plan for Jaguar operations well into the mid-2030s.

More recently, attention has turned to Ecuador. Reports indicate that the Ecuadorian Air Force has four Jaguars in storage, preserved since their retirement. India has opened discussions to acquire these airframes, following the same model as the Omani deal: dismantle for parts, integrate into India’s existing Jaguar logistics chain, and maintain fleet readiness. By securing multiple sources of retired airframes, India reduces dependency on a single supplier and ensures the continuity of a complex, legacy supply chain.

The Jaguar is the only aircraft of its type still in operational service with India, and the FMS and original European production lines no longer exist. The only practical way to sustain the fleet is to source retired airframes from other operators, either through direct purchase or through carefully negotiated transfers. India has already done this with airframes from France, Oman, and now looks to Ecuador. Each acquisition strengthens the supply pipeline and secures the ability to operate the aircraft in key strike and reconnaissance roles.

The Jaguars acquired from Oman or Ecuador are purely for sustainment purposes. The IAF is maintaining the current operational fleet size while mitigating the risks associated with an aging platform. This is a practical, low-profile solution that ensures operational continuity without major capital expenditure or the complexity of introducing an entirely new aircraft type.

The IAF’s approach demonstrates a pragmatic application of air logistics in a resource-constrained environment. By carefully sourcing retired airframes, prioritizing cannibalization, and integrating parts into a central maintenance pipeline, India is able to extend the life of its Jaguars for another decade and a half, while simultaneously preparing for gradual replacement by modern platforms in the 2030s.

Ecuador Expands Military Fleet with Two Airbus C295 Transport Aircraft

Ecuador's president, announced via his social media platforms that he has successfully secured a deal with Airbus Defence & Space for the acquisition of two C295 aircraft.

"We have finalized the purchase of two C295 aircraft from Airbus. The Minister of Defense, Luis Lara, has signed a contract that will strengthen the @EjercitoECU and @armada_ecuador with two aircraft that will be used for security and to assist Ecuadorians in times of emergency.", posted on "X"

The Ecuadorian Minister of Defense, Luis Lara, officially stamped the agreement for the procurement of two C295 military transport planes. One of these aircraft is earmarked for the Ecuadorian Army, while the other will serve the Ecuadorian Navy.

The Ecuadorian Armed Forces are already familiar with this aircraft family, given that the Air Force employs three C295s for transport and cargo tasks. The Army utilizes two CN235s, while the Navy operates an additional pair of CN235s specially configured for maritime patrol operations (MPA).

Argentinian Kfir negotiations set to resume

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has so far exported 40 Kfir Block 60 upgraded fighter aircraft, and plans to assemble and upgrade another 12-14 for Argentina.
Sources say negotiations about the proposed sale to Argentina are about to resume, following two previous rounds of talks that did not result in a contract.
Sources in Latin America say the price of the proposed deal is the main stumbling block, but “not the only one”.
The Kfir Block 60 is the latest version of the fighter, which includes J-79 engines. It also takes the aircraft back to zero flight hours after a total overhaul, and will cover the next 1,600 flight hours before another overhaul is required.
The upgraded fighter carries an Elta 2032 active electronically scanned array radar, and will have an open architecture that will allow the customer to install other systems.
According to Elta, the radar provides an all-aspect, look-down, shoot-down performance, operating simultaneous multi-mode air-to-air and advanced strike missions.
Kfir jets are in service with the air forces of Colombia, Ecuador and Sri Lanka.
The Colombian air force has upgraded its Kfirs to the existing level, dubbed C-10/12, which includes an Elta EL/M-2032 radar, a Rafael Litening targeting pod, a head-up display colour cockpit, and an aerial refuelling system.

Russia receives new Mi-8AMTSh 'Hip' helicopters

The first consignment of a recent order of 40 Mil Mi-8AMTSh 'Hip' helicopters has been delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The handover of the four Mi-8AMTSh platforms marks the start of the delivery phase of a contract that was signed in August 2013. The 40 new helicopters will add to the 30 already known to be fielded by Russia (the status of an additional order for 30 helicopters is not clear).
Specific improvements include the fitting of the more powerful and reliable Klimov VK-2500 engines and an upgraded and strengthened transmission, a new TA-14 auxiliary powerplant, additional fuel tanks, ballistic protection for the crew and systems, a night-vision goggle compatible cockpit, modern navigation equipment, the option for a nose-mounted thimble radome, and chin-mounted electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) turret.
As well as enhanced systems, the Mi-8AMTSh can also accommodate new weapons systems on 'wing' pylons, such as 9M343/9M39 Igla 'Grouse' air-to-air missiles, 9M114/9M114M Shturm-V 'Spiral' air-to-surface missiles, 23 mm gun pods, and B8V20A rocket pods equipped with S-8 80 mm unguided rockets.
Designated Mi-171Sh internationally, the Mi-8AMTSh has also been sold to Croatia, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, and Peru.

Ecuador Increases C295 Fleet by 3 Aircraft

Ecuador has added three C295 transports to its fleet of Airbus Defence and Space military aircraft. The European aerospace company announced June 9 that it had already delivered the first aircraft from its factory.
The order has been on Airbus’ books for sometime but the company has only just been cleared to reveal the deal following the handover of the first aircraft June 6.
Delivery of a second machine to the Ecuadorian Air Force is expected soon with the final aircraft following by the end of the year.
The deal includes a full service support program.
The Army and naval forces of the Latin American nation already operate two Airbus C212s and four CN235s.
Aside from the Ecuador order Airbus has also secured orders this year for a further 17 C295s from undisclosed customers.
These included eight from North Africa, two Middle East customers and a first intelligence and surveillance variant delivery in Latin America.
The executive said he expected to add to the order tally “very soon” with an announcement of a Middle East special operations customer.
Airbus is also developing a gun-ship version of the C259 for an unnamed Middle East customer.
The company already has Jordan as a customer for a gun-ship version of the smaller CN235 aircraft.

Uruguay considers plan to buy fighters from Ecuador

The Uruguayan Air Force (FAU) is considering a deal to acquire four Cessna A-37B Dragonfly combat aircraft from the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE) as an interim measure because of the lack of a government decision on procuring a new fighter.
FAU has operated the A-37B Dragonfly as its main fighter since 1976. The service's six A-37B Dragonfly aircraft were augmented by two former US Air Force (USAF) O/A-37B aircraft in 1988 and six more in 1989.

Two air forces eyeing Block 60 Kfirs, says IAI

Israel Aerospace Industries is in "very advanced negotiations" with at least two air forces that want to purchase the company's upgraded Kfir fighter in its Block 60 configuration.
The Kfir Block 60 is the latest upgrade for the Israeli-made fighter, which has been flying now for 40 years. The variant is offered with a General Electric-designed J79 engine with zero hours after a total overhaul, and will need another one after 1,600 flight hours.
Elta Systems will supply its EL/M-2032 active electronically scanned array radar, with open architecture avionics to allow a customer to install other systems.
According to Elta, the new sensor will provide an all-aspect, look-down/shoot-down performance in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, with the capability to simultaneously track up to 64 targets.
All of the ex-Israeli air force Kfirs that have been stored at one of the service's desert bases for several years are to be transferred to an IAI upgrade facility. "This line will be busy in the coming years," the IAI source says.
Current users of previously-upgraded Kfirs include Colombia and Ecuador.
