'More cuts' and Eurofighter pain if EADS fails in bid to slash costs

In detailing plans unveiled yesterday to cut nearly 6,000 jobs as part of the previously-announced consolidation of its Cassidian defence and Astrium space divisions, EADS chief executive called time on an “unwieldy” industrial structure that has left the businesses – which are only now emerging from decades of European national government control – unable to compete on cost when bidding for work outside European home markets.
The Eurofighter programme will be a particular target for restructuring, and could be in for more job cuts as early as 2016, if export sales are not secured to keep assembly lines active beyond the current 2017 schedule.
EADS is in discussions with partner BAE Systems about “restructuring” the Eurofighter consortium.
The programme being discussed with unions now calls for 5,800 jobs to be cut, including 1,300 by allowing temporary contracts to lapse. Some 2,000 jobs will go in Germany, 1,260 in France, 557 in Spain, 450 in the UK and 180 in other countries. Up to 1,500 people may be absorbed by Airbus and Eurocopter over the coming three years. Negotiations with the unions will be ongoing for several months, so it will be well into 2014 before details will be known.

CASSIDIAN'S UNMANNED AIR VEHICLE PROGRAMME "SAGITTA" ENTERS INTEGRATION PHASE

"Sagitta", Cassidian's research programme aiming at development of future Unmanned Aerial Systems' (UAS) technologies, enters into a new decisive phase: Following development and testing of core elements, the integration of the aircraft starts in Cassidian's Military Air Systems Center Manching, close to Munich.
The project "Sagitta" includes the construction of a flight demonstrator, the purpose of which is to verify the validity and feasibility of the theoretical research results. The integration is planned to be finalized end of next year; first flights of the Sagitta demonstrator are scheduled for 2015.
The reference configuration for the research work is a tailless flying wing with a wingspan of 12 metres. The demonstrator will initially be built on a scale of 1:4. The first wind tunnel tests have already been successfully completed. After 2 years of intense design work, the first parts of the extremely light-weight carbon fibre structure are now in production, and a dedicated system integration rig has been setup to start assembly of the individual avionic components and to perform the required hardware-in-the-loop simulations.

CASSIDIAN PROTECTS AIRCRAFT PASSENGERS AGAINST MISSILE ATTACKS

Cassidian, has developed an intelligent system for the protection of civil aircraft against attacks by missiles of the MANPADS type (Man-Portable Air-Defense Systems), which will allow aircraft to fly over crisis areas, to take off and land on civil airports and also to fly in civil airspace.
As reported by the company, following extensive investigations, the aviation authorities EASA and LBA have now given a positive answer to a preliminary query submitted by Cassidian, which means that the system now can be integrated into aircraft of the size of business jets, outside of scheduled traffic. This particularly concerns aircraft operators which offer air transport to crisis areas on behalf of governments or aid organisations and which are particularly exposed to attacks by light IR-guided missiles, the so-called MANPADS.

Maiden flight of Cassidian’s ATLANTE unmanned air vehicle in Spain

The ATLANTE programme is the most important technological and industrial initiative in the Spanish unmanned air vehicle sector.
First flight took place today at Rozas airfield in Lugo

After having determined the Spanish industry’s interest in UAS, the ATLANTE programme was launched by the Spanish Centre for Industrial Technological Development (Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial – CDTI), which acted as an aviation industry programme manager, with the aim of fostering the development of this kind of technology through a project carried out entirely in Spain. The ATLANTE is now the most important industrial and technological initiative in Spain in the UAS sector. Cassidian is participating in the programme as the driving force behind the industrial model, with three high-tech venture capital partners (Indra, GMV and Aries). More than 140 Spanish subcontractors and suppliers are also cooperating in the programme, generating more than 500 skilled jobs.

The ATLANTE UAS is equipped with the latest-generation technology (automation, sensors, protection systems, etc.) developed by the Spanish industry, and has been designed according to the standards used for manned aircraft. This gives it unique features in terms of airworthiness and certification that will allow it to operate in civil airspace, unlike current systems that are limited to operations in conflict scenarios (e.g. Afghanistan). This ability, coupled with its operating flexibility – in accordance with the Spanish customer's requirements – make the ATLANTE the first tactical UAS capable of carrying out both civil and military missions, such as urban and rural surveillance, search and rescue, natural disasters, forest fires, monitoring of sporting events, etc., and of operating from prepared runways or being launched from catapults.
