Spain Approves €30M for Naval Defense and a Potential Domestic Shield Against Drones and Rockets



The Spanish Council of Ministers has just greenlit a major strategic move to protect its fleet. With a budget of €29.6 million, the government has authorized a framework agreement to supply three advanced ship defense systems over the next six years.

The official reference is brief, but the message is clear: the Spanish Navy (Armada) is prioritizing C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System) and point-defense capabilities to face the "cheap but deadly" threats seen in recent conflicts like the Red Sea.

Focus on National Sovereignty

Everything points towards a "National Product" approach. The Spanish Ministry of Defense has been consistently supporting the domestic industry to ensure technological independence. This framework agreement is likely designed to integrate Spanish-made solutions into the fleet's defensive layers.

Potential National Solutions Under Review

While the specific models have not been officially confirmed, the Spanish defense industry offers several high-tier systems that align with the Navy's requirements:

  • Escribano M&E (Sentinel Series): This company is a key player in remote-controlled weapon stations (RWS). Their Sentinel 30 is already a known quantity for the Navy, providing "hard-kill" capabilities to neutralize drones and surface threats using advanced optronics and ballistic calculation.

  • Indra (Crow System): As a leader in electronic warfare, Indra’s Crow platform is often cited in C-UAS discussions. It offers a comprehensive "soft-kill" approach, using high-precision radars and jamming technology to disrupt drone signals before they reach their target.
  • TRC & Escribano (CERVUS/Guardian): Other domestic developments, such as the CERVUS platform, have already demonstrated effective command-and-control capabilities in countering unmanned aerial threats during military trials, making them strong candidates for naval adaptation.

Why This Investment Matters

The modern naval battlefield has changed. The Armada needs to protect high-value assets, such as the LHD Juan Carlos I or the F-100 frigates, against asymmetric threats. This investment ensures that Spanish vessels are equipped with smart, cost-effective technology to handle "swarm" attacks—where traditional missiles might be over-dimensioned or too expensive to use.

This framework agreement represents a strategic step for the Spanish defense sector, reinforcing the role of local engineering in protecting the nation's interests at sea.

Beyond Patriot: Spain May Be Exploring a European Air Defense Solution


Recent reports of a cooperation agreement between Indra and Diehl Defence on ground-based air defense systems may represent more than just an industrial partnership.

While details remain limited, the agreement could hint at a broader strategic direction for Spain: greater participation in European air defense technology and reduced dependence on non-European systems.

A Logical Industrial Partnership



The collaboration between Indra and Diehl makes sense from a technological perspective.

Diehl Defence is the manufacturer of the IRIS-T SLM, one of Europe’s most modern ground-based air defense systems. The system has gained significant attention in recent years following its operational deployment in Ukraine, where it has been credited with strong performance against cruise missiles, drones, and aircraft.

Indra, on the other hand, is one of Europe’s leading developers of advanced radar systems, sensor networks and command-and-control software

These capabilities are essential components of modern integrated air defense systems.

In practical terms, this means Spain could contribute radar, sensors, and system integration, while Diehl provides the missile and launcher technology.

Spain’s Current Air Defense Situation

At present, Spain’s long-range air defense capability is largely based on the MIM-104 Patriot, operated by the Ejército de Tierra.

However, the number of available systems is limited, and like many NATO countries, Spain faces growing pressure to strengthen its layered air defense architecture.

Across Europe, the trend is clear: countries are investing in multi-layered air defense, combining long-range missile defense with medium-range and short-range systems designed to counter drones, cruise missiles, and aircraft.

The European Context: Sky Shield

Germany has been actively promoting the European Sky Shield Initiative, a project aimed at building a coordinated European air defense network.

Within that concept:

  • long-range missile defense systems handle ballistic threats
  • medium-range systems like IRIS-T provide area defense
  • short-range systems counter drones and low-altitude targets

If Spain were to adopt or participate in the IRIS-T ecosystem, it could integrate more deeply into this European defense architecture while ensuring industrial participation for its own companies.

Beyond the military dimension, the partnership could have major implications for Spain’s defense industry.

Participation in a European air defense program could allow Spain to integrate Indra radar technology into future systems, secure industrial workshare and production opportunities and develop expertise in networked air defense architecture

In other words, Spain would not simply be buying a system, but participating in its development and evolution.

A Step Toward Strategic Autonomy?

The agreement does not necessarily mean Spain will purchase IRIS-T systems in the near future. Industrial cooperation agreements often precede procurement decisions by several years.

However, the timing is notable. As European countries reassess their defense posture and supply chains, partnerships like this may represent an early step toward greater European defense technological independence.

If the cooperation deepens, Spain could eventually play a significant role in the next generation of European integrated air defense systems.

Azerbaiyán despliega radares Lanza españoles para la vigilancia aérea de largo alcance

 


Azerbaiyán ha reforzado en los últimos años su red de vigilancia aérea mediante el despliegue de radares Lanza, un sistema diseñado y fabricado en España por la industria nacional de defensa. Estos sistemas han sido observados recientemente en vídeos difundidos por el propio Ministerio de Defensa azerbaiyano, confirmando su presencia en distintas localizaciones estratégicas del país.

El radar Lanza es un producto desarrollado por Indra, una de las principales empresas europeas en sistemas de mando y control, sensores y vigilancia aérea. Se trata de un radar tridimensional de largo alcance, concebido para la detección, seguimiento y clasificación de aeronaves en escenarios complejos, incluidos entornos con interferencias electrónicas o amenazas de baja observabilidad.

Las plataformas observadas corresponden a variantes tácticas de la familia Lanza, como el LTR-20 o el LTR-25, capaces de proporcionar cobertura aérea amplia y persistente. Estos radares pueden desplegarse de forma relativamente rápida y operar de manera autónoma o integrados en redes nacionales de defensa aérea, una capacidad especialmente relevante en regiones con tensiones geopolíticas latentes.

Que Azerbaiyán haya apostado por un radar español no es un detalle menor. La familia Lanza es utilizada también por fuerzas aéreas de países de la OTAN y ha sido probada en misiones reales de vigilancia del espacio aéreo, lo que subraya su madurez tecnológica y fiabilidad operativa. Su exportación confirma además la competitividad internacional de la industria española en un segmento altamente sensible como el de los sensores militares.

Desde el punto de vista estratégico, estos radares permiten a Azerbaiyán mejorar su capacidad de alerta temprana y control del espacio aéreo, reforzando la detección de amenazas convencionales y no convencionales en un entorno regional cada vez más complejo. Al mismo tiempo, ponen de relieve el papel de España como proveedor de tecnologías clave en defensa, más allá de plataformas aéreas o navales.

En definitiva, el despliegue —ahora visualmente confirmado— de radares Lanza en Azerbaiyán no solo responde a necesidades de seguridad regional, sino que reafirma el peso real de la tecnología española en el mercado internacional de defensa aérea.

Spain Launches Feasibility Study for New Airborne SIGINT Aircraft


There are capabilities that make headlines, and others that quietly define real military power. Airborne Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) firmly belongs to the second category. After more than a decade without a dedicated platform, Spain has finally taken a first —and long overdue— step to recover this strategic capability.
The Spanish Ministry of Defence has allocated €16 million for a feasibility study focused on the design of a future airborne signals interception aircraft, with Airbus Defence and Space and Indra selected to carry out the work. While this is not yet a procurement decision, it is the clearest signal so far that Spain intends to return to the electromagnetic battlespace with its own national assets.

Since the retirement of the Boeing 707 “Reina del Espectro” and the Falcon 20 electronic warfare aircraft, the Spanish Air and Space Force has operated without an organic airborne SIGINT platform. In practical terms, this meant relying on allied capabilities for missions that are increasingly central to modern operations.
The future aircraft is expected to detect, track, classify, and identify targets of interest to the Spanish Armed Forces, operating across radar emissions, communications, and data links. In an era where sensors, networks, and electronic attack shape the battlefield as much as fighters and missiles, this is not a luxury capability—it is a foundational one.

The industrial pairing makes sense. Airbus provides experience in military aircraft integration and missionized platforms, while Indra brings national expertise in SIGINT, ELINT, electronic warfare, and sensor fusion. Together, they cover both the airframe and the brain of the system.
The study will analyze possible platforms, sensor suites, mission systems, and integration concepts. A medium-sized jet aircraft is widely considered the most realistic option, balancing endurance, payload, and operational flexibility without the complexity of larger platforms.

Although no numbers have been officially confirmed, Spain is expected to field a limited fleet—likely two or three aircraft—sufficient to ensure availability while managing maintenance and training cycles. This would align with similar SIGINT fleets operated by European allies.
If the study progresses into a full programme and receives political approval, Spain could restore its airborne SIGINT capability sometime in the early-to-mid 2030s. Quietly, but decisively.

This move should be seen less as an ambition and more as a correction. Modern air forces cannot afford to operate blind in the electromagnetic spectrum, particularly within NATO, where interoperability depends as much on shared data as on shared platforms.
Spain’s future SIGINT aircraft will not lead flypasts or dominate defence exhibitions—but it will listen, analyze, and understand. And in today’s operational environment, that may be one of the most valuable capabilities an air force can possess.

Spain Awards Lockheed Martin $519m For F-110 5 Aegis & SPY-7 Radar Systems

The U.S. Navy, on behalf of Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customer Spain, has awarded Lockheed Martin a $519.1 million contract to support AEGIS and SPY-7 systems for the future F-110 frigates of the Spanish Navy.
The contract covers the procurement of AEGIS fire control loop development, Solid State S-Band Radar Processing Group, tools and test equipment, and spares for five new multi-mission frigates operating the AEGIS combat system.This FMS contract will support the in-development Bonifaz-class (F-110) Frigates of the Spanish Navy and their SPY-7 radar.
The contracted work will be performed mostly in the US and is expected to be completed by April 2030.
Spain is obligating $90.7 million in FMS funding at the time of the award.
Navantia and the Spanish Ministry of Defense have signed the contract for the construction of five F-110 frigates for the Spanish Navy in April 2019.
F-110 frigates are set to replace the Spanish Navy’s Santa Maria-class frigates which have been in service for over 30 years. F-110 frigates will be fitted with the Aegis combat system integrating a new solid-state S-band radar by Indra. Lockheed Martin and Indra have been collaborating since 2009 to develop a state-of-the-art S-band solid state radar for Spain’s F-110 Frigate Program.

Oman to get Lanza surveillance radar system

Oman has ordered a new air defence surveillance system for its air force based on the Lanza 3D radar.
The Spanish company Indra announced on 30 September that it will "integrate its most advanced air surveillance solutions" in Oman. The company did not identify the system, but said the radar Oman will receive is already in operation with several air forces and "handles the surveillance in Europe's NATO southwest flank".
Lanza surveillance radar, which is in service with both the Spanish and Portuguese militaries, as well as several Latin American countries.

First Typhoon Flight With AESA Radar due later this year

A Eurofighter Typhoon combat jet is due to fly for the first time with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar later this year.
Euroradar is confident that the demonstration will persuade all four partner countries to sign a development contract this summer. The Eurofighter program’s partners are Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The signatures would end a more than three-year wait in which industry has funded development of a radar vital to the twin-engine combat jet’s hopes of winning an export competition.
Led by Italy’s Selex, Euroradar includes Airbus and Spain’s Indra, companies that worked on the mechanically scanned Captor radar used on the aircraft.
A modified Typhoon, IPA5, flown by BAE Systems, began test flights in February with a nonfunctional version of the new radar. But it had the correct cabling to check the weight, volume and connections of the sensor.

Recepción del Simulador de Vuelo del C.16 en la Base Aérea de Albacete y Ala 14



El día 15 de febrero de 2013 tuvo lugar el acto de recepción del Simulador de Vuelo del C.16 en la Base Aérea de Albacete y Ala 14, al que asistieron el jefe del Programa, representantes de la empresa Cassidian y de la empresa Indra, y el jefe del Ala 14.

El Simulador entregado forma parte del sistema de entrenamiento avanzado ASTA (Aircrew Synthetic Training Aid). Cassidian como contratista e Indra como subcontratista se han responsabilizado de todas las actividades de instalación y puesta en marcha de este entrenador de cabina y de la estación interactiva de piloto (Cockpit Trainer / Interactive Pilot Station – CT/IPS-E), que junto al simulador de misión (Full Mission Simulator – FMS) forman el ASTA.

Indra Develops First High-Resolution Passive Radar System


Indra has recently completed the development and demonstration of a passive high-resolution primary radar system. The project was sponsored by the European Defence Agency (EDA). This is the first passive system in the world that is capable of offering images with the application of inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) techniques.

INDRA TO IMPLEMENT ITS TECHNOLOGY IN INDONESIA'S TYPE 209 SUBMARINES FOR MORE THAN €10M


Indra has been awarded the contracts to equip three of the Indonesian Navy's Type 209 submarines with its radar signal detection system and a Low Probability of Intercept radar (LPI) system. The value of this project, awarded by the shipbuilder Daewoo, is in excess of €10M.

The electronic defence system will enable the submarines to detect and analyze any radar signals there might be in their surroundings and identify the type of vessel, submarine or aircraft they correspond to.

INDRA DEVELOPS A MARITIME SURVEILLANCE LIGHT AIRCRAFT



Indra, a leading IT multinational in Europe, is working on the development of a new maritime surveillance light aircraft in collaboration with Italian aircraft manufacturer Tecnam, firms SELEX Galileo, FLIR Systems and Remote Sensing and Sensor Integration company Airborne Technologies.
The five partners seek to develop an aircraft equipped to provide state-of-the-art surveillance at a more competitive cost in terms of acquisition and operation. The aircraft will be ready to engage in rescue missions, protection of fishing fleets and environment; and surveillance of illegal trafficking of either people or drugs, among others. The aircraft will be ready to enter service by the end of 2012.

Indra ha anunciado la venta a Hainan Airlines de dos simuladores para A320, lo que reafirma la posición de Indra en el mercado chino, habiendo entregado ya seis simuladores en ese país, y lo convierte en uno de los mayores fabricantes de simuladores del mundo. Indra ha entregado 147 simuladores a 15 países y 39 clientes, civiles y militares, con mas de 700.000 horas de funcionamiento.

Indra announced a contract with Hainan Airlines to expand its pilot training centre with two simulators supporting Airbus A-320 passenger aircraft. The contract reaffirms Indra’s position in the civil simulation market in China, with 6 simulators previously delivered and confirms the company as one of the main simulator manufacturers across the world. Indra has delivered 147 simulators to 15 countries and 39 clients for either civil or military pilots, drivers, machinery operators as well as numerous simulation systems for air traffic controllers. Indra’s simulators have covered more than 700,000 hours of training.
