🇪🇸🇺🇸 Spain, United States and the Iran crisis: a visible contradiction



The current crisis surrounding possible Western military action against Iran has produced an unusual situation within the transatlantic alliance: a visible contradiction between Washington and Madrid over Spain’s role.

While the United States has suggested that Spain would support operations linked to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Spanish government has publicly denied any such commitment. Yet, at the same time, military movements linked to the crisis appear to continue from Spanish territory.

The contrast between official statements and observable activity raises important questions about Spain’s real position in the unfolding situation.

Washington Says Spain Is Cooperating

In recent statements reported by international media, officials in Washington indicated that Spain would cooperate with U.S. military operations related to the confrontation with Iran.

The claim suggested that Spain, as a NATO ally hosting key American bases, would be part of the broader logistical network supporting operations in the region.

For the United States, Spain plays a strategic role in the Western Mediterranean. Facilities such as Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base are critical nodes in U.S. force projection between the Atlantic, Europe and the Middle East.

Madrid Publicly Denies Involvement

However, the Spanish government quickly moved to reject those claims, insisting that Spain has not authorised the use of its bases for offensive operations against Iran.

The denial places Madrid in a delicate position. Spain remains a committed NATO ally and hosts a significant U.S. military presence, yet the government appears determined to avoid being seen as directly participating in a potential escalation in the Middle East.

This divergence has created the unusual spectacle of two allied governments presenting different versions of Spain’s role in the crisis.

Naval Deployment in the Eastern Mediterranean



At the same time, Spain is reportedly preparing to deploy one of its most advanced warships to the Eastern Mediterranean following a drone strike near a British base in Cyprus.

Although details remain limited, the ship involved is widely believed to be a modern Spanish frigate of the Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate, among the most capable air-defence vessels in European service.

Such a deployment would place a Spanish naval asset in proximity to a region experiencing rising tensions and increasing military activity.

Officially, the move is framed as a protective or stabilisation measure, rather than a direct contribution to offensive operations.

Strategic Airlift Activity After the Denial



Adding another layer of complexity, military flight activity has continued after Madrid’s public denial.

Shortly after the Spanish government rejected Washington’s claims, a Boeing C‑17 Globemaster III belonging to the United States Air Force departed from Naval Station Rota.

The aircraft reportedly departed from Rota, made a stop at Naval Air Station Sigonella, a key U.S. logistics hub in the Mediterranean and  continued towards the Middle East.

Open-source flight tracking indicated that the aircraft’s transponder stopped transmitting while approaching Egyptian airspace — a common occurrence for military aircraft entering operational areas.

While the cargo and mission of the aircraft remain unknown, the timing of the flight has inevitably drawn attention.

A Classic Case of Strategic Ambiguity

Taken together, these elements paint a picture that is not unusual in international security affairs: public caution combined with operational flexibility.

Spain may be seeking to maintain political distance from a potential escalation while still allowing routine or previously authorised military activity to continue.

For Washington, meanwhile, the priority is maintaining the logistical network required to sustain operations in the Middle East.

The result is a situation where official narratives and observable military movements do not entirely align.

The Mediterranean Once Again at the Centre

The episode also highlights the enduring strategic importance of Spain’s geography.

From Rota and Morón to the wider network of Mediterranean bases, Spain remains a critical bridge between Europe and the Middle East. In times of crisis, military activity in these locations inevitably attracts scrutiny.

Whether Spain ultimately becomes more directly involved in the unfolding situation remains to be seen.

For now, however, the crisis has already produced something rare within NATO: a public contradiction between allies — accompanied by quiet but visible military movements on the ground and in the air.

Implicaciones de la posible restricción estadounidense de exportaciones de defensa a España


Las recientes declaraciones del presidente Donald Trump, calificando a España como un “aliado terrible” y sugiriendo un posible corte del trato comercial, abren una cuestión que trasciende la retórica política:

¿Qué impacto tendría una eventual restricción estadounidense en materia de exportaciones de defensa hacia España?

Aunque un “corte total” resulta improbable en el marco de la OTAN, incluso limitaciones parciales bajo el régimen ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) tendrían efectos relevantes.

Este análisis examina dependencias críticas y posibles escenarios.
1. Dependencia en el ámbito naval

Fragatas F-100 y F-110 y el Helicóptero MH-60R



Las F-100 españolas operan el sistema AEGIS, desarrollado por Lockheed Martin y las futuras F-110 incorporan el radar SPY-7 y arquitectura asociada al ecosistema AEGIS. Sin el soporte técnico las fragatas dejarían de ser útiles para las misiones para las que han sido diseñadas dejarían de ser interoperables dentro del marco OTAN. 

Respecto al Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk, España adquirió 8 unidades a través del
programa FMS (Foreign Military Sales) de EE. UU para sustituir progresivamente a los SH-60B y son una herramienta clave para la guerra antisubmarina (ASW) y antisuperficie. 



Todas las unidades están pendientes de entrega y este programa depende totalmente de EE.UU. Una posible restricción congelaría las entregas y mermaría drásticamente la capacidad antisubmarina de la Armada Española.

Los AV-8B Harrier II constituyen el punto más frágil del esquema actual: su extensión hasta 2035 depende en gran medida del soporte y la cadena logística del United States Marine Corps, último gran operador del modelo. Sin acceso a repuestos, certificaciones y apoyo técnico estadounidense, la viabilidad de la flota podría verse comprometida antes de lo previsto, afectando directamente a la capacidad de ala fija embarcada del Juan Carlos I.




2. Capacidad submarina




El programa S-80 integra el sistema de combate SCOMBA, desarrollado por Navantia Sistemas, con asistencia tecnológica de la americana Lockheed Martin.
Una restricción afectaría a modernizaciones futuras e impediría la integración de armas como misiles de crucero 'Tomahawk'.
En sistemas submarinos, donde la superioridad depende del ciclo continuo de actualización, este aspecto es particularmente sensible.

3. Aviación de combate




España continúa operando F-18, con dependencia en repuestos críticos, actualizaciones de aviónica y la munición aire-aire 'estrella' el AIM-120 AMRAAM.
El impacto sería gradual: reducción progresiva de disponibilidad operativa si se interrumpiera el flujo logístico.

4. Defensa aérea y antimisil




Este podría ser el ámbito de mayor vulnerabilidad inmediata ya que España emplea los misiles Patriot PAC-3, ESSM, SM-2 y SM-6. Recientemente España firmó la adquisición de nuevas baterías del sistema Patriot PAC-3 a través del programa FMS estadounidense, siendo probablemente, la mayor inversión española reciente en defensa aérea y suponiendo una mejora drástica de capacidades. 
La guerra en Ucrania ha demostrado de forma inequívoca que la defensa aérea y antimisil no es un complemento, sino un pilar central de la defensa nacional. La protección frente a misiles balísticos, de crucero y drones se ha convertido en una capacidad decisiva. En el contexto europeo actual, marcado por la inestabilidad en el flanco oriental, sistemas como el Patriot PAC-3 adquieren una relevancia estratégica de primer orden. Una eventual restricción que afectara a su suministro, modernización o sostenimiento no solo reduciría capacidades técnicas, sino que erosionaría un elemento esencial de la arquitectura defensiva española y su integración en la defensa colectiva aliada.

5. Impacto industrial

Empresas como Navantia integran tecnología estadounidense en programas destinados tanto a la Armada española como a exportación. Las restricciones podrían limitar ventas a terceros países, incrementar costes por rediseño de subsistemas y retrasar calendarios de entrega.
La afectación no sería inmediata, pero sí estructural en el medio plazo.

6. Viabilidad política de un escenario restrictivo
Desde el punto de vista jurídico, Estados Unidos dispone de herramientas regulatorias para limitar exportaciones de defensa. Sin embargo, España es aliado OTAN, alberga infraestructuras estratégicas en el flanco sur y participa en arquitectura de defensa colectiva.
Una ruptura total tendría costes estratégicos para ambas partes.
El escenario más plausible, en caso de tensiones, sería una restricción selectiva o retrasos administrativos, no una interrupción absoluta.

7. Implicaciones estratégicas

Una eventual restricción aceleraría tres tendencias:
  • Diversificación de proveedores.
  • Refuerzo de la cooperación industrial europea.
  • Debate interno sobre autonomía estratégica.
No obstante, la sustitución plena de tecnología estadounidense no es inmediata ni económicamente neutra. El coste en recursos y en tiempo sería incalculable. 

Conclusión

La dependencia española de tecnología de defensa estadounidense es significativa en áreas críticas: defensa aérea, sistemas navales avanzados y aviación. Un corte total es improbable en el corto plazo. Una restricción parcial es técnicamente viable y según las recientes declaraciones de Trump, Estados Unidos no necesita nada de los líderes de España.
Consideramos que el momento actual, España no puede permitirse prescindir de Estados Unidos, la primera potencia mundial ni en materia de Defensa ni en cualquier otra área. 
En el hipotético caso de que las restricciones anunciadas por el presidente Trump, se hicieran realidad, las consecuencias respecto a las capacidades de las Fuerzas Armadas Españolas, se notarían desde el primer momento, serían devastadoras y podrían dejar de poder cumplir la misión que les encomienda la Constitución Española: Garantizar la soberanía e independencia de España, defender su integridad territorial y el ordenamiento constitucional.

Spain Authorizes 580 Million Euro Deal for Patriot and NSM Missiles

Spain's Council of Ministers, in its meeting on November 7, has given the green light to two missile purchase programs, amounting to a combined total of €580 million. This significant decision is a crucial component of Spain's broader initiative for the rearmament of its Armed Forces, a strategic move influenced by the insights gained from the conflict in Ukraine. The two programs in question involve the acquisition of Patriot missiles and Naval Strike Missiles (NSM), with a substantial budget allocation of €400 million for Patriots and €180 million for NSMs.

Patriot Missile Program:



The procurement of state-of-the-art Patriot missiles is deemed imperative for ensuring the continued effectiveness of the missile defense system. The goal is to replace outdated components, guaranteeing the security of Spain's national airspace and upholding commitments made within the NATO alliance. The estimated value of the Patriot missile framework agreement is €400 million. This advanced missile system, configured in the 3+ setup, is designed to intercept and neutralize ballistic missiles, showcasing enhanced precision and capabilities at distances exceeding 100 kilometers.

The Spanish Ministry of Defense, in its pursuit of modernization, authorized the acquisition of Patriot missiles from the United States in early October, specifying the 3+ configuration. The comprehensive program involves the upgrade of launchers in the Army to the 3+ configuration, along with the procurement of the latest Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3MSE) missiles. All launchers, both upgraded and new, are set to be integrated into the heavy-duty Iveco vehicles currently in service across the Armed Forces. These new missiles, although smaller in size, boast advanced onboard technology significantly enhancing their precision compared to earlier versions. Their primary mission is to intercept and bring down ballistic missiles at distances well beyond 100 kilometers.

Spain initially acquired its first Patriot battery from Germany in 2004, followed a decade later by the purchase of two additional second-hand batteries from Germany to fulfill commitments made during the NATO summit in 2014. The Army received these acquisitions, including the Central Control and Information (ICC) station, vehicle carriers, communication equipment, and logistical elements, in June 2015. One of the three batteries is permanently deployed in NATO's Active Fence mission in Turkey, safeguarding the city of Adana against potential ballistic missile threats from neighboring Syria.

NSM Missile Program:


The Spanish Navy has opted for the NSM, developed by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, to replace the aging Harpoon missile system. The NSM is slated to be equipped on F-100 frigates after their mid-life upgrade and on the upcoming F-110 class frigates and S80 submarines. The collaboration between the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia and Kongsberg aims to foster joint efforts in integrating NSMs into both current and future naval units.

The NSM, with a remarkable range exceeding 185 kilometers, is set to replace the Harpoon missiles currently in service with the Spanish Navy. The retirement of the Harpoon missiles is anticipated around 2030, aligning with current plans. Notably, the NSM has garnered recent interest from other European countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Poland. In late 2022, the Spanish Government granted the Ministry of Defense the authority to enter into a contract valued at €125 million for the acquisition of NSMs. However, specific details regarding the quantity of missiles and associated equipment included in the order have not been disclosed as of now.

The NSM's multifaceted capabilities make it a versatile addition to the Spanish Navy's arsenal. With a range that far exceeds its predecessor, the NSM not only serves as an anti-ship missile but also provides the capability for selective and precise attacks on land targets. Equipped with a military-grade GPS navigation system and a laser altimeter, the NSM employs Terrain Reference Navigation (TRN) to identify targets, using the same image recognition system employed against naval targets. Its cutting-edge technology, including a sophisticated infrared image recognition system and a high-explosive warhead encased in a titanium shell, ensures accurate target discrimination and minimizes collateral damage.

In conclusion, Spain's recent approval of these missile acquisition programs underscores its commitment to modernizing and fortifying its defense capabilities. This strategic move reflects a proactive response to evolving geopolitical challenges and aims to position Spain as a technologically advanced and capable force on the global stage.

Spain recalls 'Mendez Nuñez' frigate from US Navy strike group over Gulf tensions

Spain has recalled a frigate accompanying a U.S. aircraft carrier to the Middle East because of rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, the defense ministry said Tuesday, May 14.
“For the moment the frigate Mendez Nuñez has left the combat group of the USS Abraham Lincoln,” a ministry spokesperson told AFP, confirming a report in the Spanish daily El Pais.
“It’s a temporary withdrawal, decided by Defense Minister Margarita Robles, as long as the American aircraft carrier is in this zone,” the spokesman added.
He said the Spanish frigate had joined the aircraft carrier’s strike group for a military exercise.
“No possible confrontation or warlike action is envisaged [by Spain] and it is for this reason that the participation is suspended for the moment,” he added.

General Dynamics unveils their guided missile frigate proposal for U.S. Navy, based on Spanish F-100 design

Major United States shipyard General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, has unveiled their guided missile frigate proposal under the FFG(X) program for the U.S. Navy.
The concept of new guided missile frigate was unveiled during annual Sea-Air-Space, the largest maritime exposition in the United States.
In February 2018, the U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works a $14.9 million contract for the concept design of the Navy’s planned Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)).
Bath Iron Works’ proposed design is based on a family of AEGIS Guided Missile Frigates designed by the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia.
The Navy’s initial request for proposals in November required that frigate designs be based on an existing hull form that is already in service. The Navy has said the requirement will make the planned production of 20 frigates more affordable and bring the ships to the fleet more quickly. The Detail Design and Construction award is planned to be in 2020.
Bath Iron Works designed the Navy’s prior frigate, the Oliver Hazard Perry class, and built many of the hulls. Bath Iron Works partnered with Navantia in the 1980s to adapt the Oliver Hazard Perry design for construction by the Spanish shipbuilding industry and for use by the Spanish Navy.

Spanish frigate 'Cristobal Colón' deploys to Australia for AWD support

Spanish Navy’s Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate Cristóbal Colón is scheduled to embark on a long-term deployment to Australia on January 9.
Under an agreement between the two navies, the Aegis-equipped frigate will spend 120 days in Australia where it will help train future Australian Hobart-class destroyer sailors of the Australian Navy.
By integrating into the Australian Navy fleet, Cristóbal Colón will provide dedicated training and familiarisation opportunities for the crews of Australian destroyers Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney.
NUSHIP Hobart, the first of three destroyers, will start category 5 sea trials in mid-January 2017 and will be assisted in the process by ESPS Cristóbal Colón.
If everything goes according to plan, the Spanish frigate is expected to return to Ferrol, Spain in early August 2017.
This is not the first time a Spanish Navy ship is integrating into the Royal Australian Navy. Back in 2013, Spain sent its replenishment ships ESPS Cantabria to Australia where it remained for eight months.

La fragata ‘Méndez Núñez’ ha llegado hoy a su base en Ferrol, tras casi 6 meses de despliegue en la operación “Atalanta” de lucha contra la piratería en aguas del océano Índico.

Primera toma de un helicóptero en la cubierta de vuelo de la fragata “Cristóbal Colón”



El pasado 09 de febrero la fragata salió de su base en Ferrol hacia la Base Naval de Rota (Cádiz), realizando su primera navegación fuera de las aguas de Ferrol.
El 14 de febrero, a las 18:15 horas, un helicóptero Sikorsky SH3-D perteneciente a la 5ª Escuadrilla de la Flotilla de Aeronaves realizó la primera toma de una aeronave sobre la cubierta de vuelo de la fragata F-105 ‘Cristóbal Colón’.
Esta toma se enmarca dentro del proceso de inspección, certificación y adiestramiento aeronaval que la fragata comenzó el día 11 de febrero, en aguas del Golfo de Cádiz y que finalizó el 15 de febrero. Culmina así un proceso que capacita y acredita a la fragata para operar como buque con capacidad aérea (BCCA).
La cubierta de vuelo de la fragata ‘Cristóbal Colón’, como en las demás fragatas F-100, está diseñada para operar, lanzar, recibir y dar apoyo, tanto de día como de noche a los helicópteros de la Flotilla de Aeronaves.
Con el objeto de realizar este proceso de certificación, la fragata salió de su base en Ferrol el pasado 09 de febrero para entrar el día 11 en la Base Naval de Rota (Cádiz), alcanzando así otro hito en la historia del buque, al realizar su primera navegación fuera de las aguas de Ferrol.

El buque ‘Cantabria’ aprovisiona en aguas de Somalia a la fragata ‘Méndez Núñez’




El buque de aprovisionamiento de combate ‘Cantabria’, que navega rumbo a Australia, y la fragata ‘Méndez Núñez’, participante en la Operación “Atalanta”, se encontraron el sábado pasado en el Golfo de Adén para realizar aprovisionamiento y petroleo en la mar.
El aprovisionamiento consistió en el traspaso de 44 palés de alimentos y material diverso necesario para la navegación. Para ello, se realizaron dos tipos de maniobras diferentes. La primera consistió en el transbordo de 31 palés de un barco a otro mediante cableado. La complejidad de esta operación, que duró unas dos horas, reside en que los buques deben navegar en todo momento a una misma velocidad y rumbo, y además contar con las condiciones meteorológicas y de la mar.
El resto de palés fueron transferidos mediante una maniobra de aprovisionamiento vertical, empleando el helicóptero SH-60B que embarca la fragata española durante su participación en la operación “Atalanta”.
Además del transbordo de material, el BAC ‘Cantabria’ suministró simultáneamente a las fragatas “Méndez Núñez” y a la francesa ‘Surcouf’ 200.000 litros de combustible a cada uno. La maniobra se realizó conjuntamente con los dos barcos por las dos bandas del buque de aprovisionamiento de combate.
El BAC ‘Cantabria’ partió el 3 de enero de Ferrol rumbo a Australia para desplegarse a mediados de febrero junto a la Marina de este país durante un período de nueve meses. Esta misión permitirá a la Armada operar en un escenario de marcado interés estratégico, mejorar el adiestramiento del buque y su dotación, así como poner a prueba los mecanismos de apoyo a despliegues de larga duración.
Por su parte, la fragata ‘Méndez Núñez’ está integrada desde el 6 de diciembre en la Operación “Atalanta” de lucha contra la piratería en el océano Índico, que desarrolla la Fuerza Naval de la Unión Europea (EUNAVFOR). Su cometido principal es la escolta y protección de los buques del Programa Mundial de Alimentos (World Food Program – WFP), la seguridad marítima internacional y contribuir a la lucha contra la piratería en aguas del Índico próximas a Somalia y Golfo de Adén. Además, la fragata aloja al Estado Mayor Multinacional de EUNAVFOR, con lo que está ejerciendo la labor de buque de mando en “Atalanta”.

Escudo antimisiles: la participación de las fragatas españolas costaría 250 millones


El Estado Mayor de la Armada, informó que la adaptación del software y adquisición de misiles para que las cinco fragatas F-100 de la Armada española pudieran participar en el Sistema de Defensa Antimisiles de la OTAN supondría una inversión de unos 250 millones de euros, una cantidad que ahora la Armada no puede asumir y, por tanto, se descarta a corto plazo dicha participación de los buques españoles en este proyecto de defensa de la OTAN.

Navantia delivered the fifth and final F-100 to the Navy on October 18


The public spanish company Navantia delivered next day 18 to the Spanish Navy 's fifth and last of the frigate F-100 acquired by Defence and manufactured in Ferrol. From that date, they will only shipyard in production in its final phase, the second Navy ship to Australia, the Adelaide .

First Keel Laying for Royal Australian Navy Hobart Class Destroyer




September 6, 2012 marked the start of the consolidation phase of the Royal Australian Navy Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) project with the laying of the first keel at Techport Australia in Adelaide.

AWD Alliance CEO Rod Equid said the first keel laying is a significant milestone in the AWD project as it marks the start of the next phase in the delivery of three world-class warships to the Royal Australian Navy.

“It’s an exciting time with work on the AWD project progressing well. From today we will see steady progress on consolidation of the first ship with its hull due for completion on the hardstand within 15 months.”

“BAE Systems has delivered all seven blocks to AWD Shipbuilder ASC in Adelaide for Ship 1. Forgacs is expected to deliver seven blocks for Ship 1 before the end of the year.”

“Block fabrication work is now underway on all three ships at ASC Shipyard in Adelaide, Forgacs shipyards in Newcastle, BAE Systems shipyard in Melbourne and Navantia’s shipyard in Spain.”

Australian Air Warfare Destroyer Update





Minister for Defence Stephen Smith, Minister for Finance and Deregulation Senator Penny Wong and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today attended the laying of the keel of the first Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) in Adelaide and provided an update on the $8 billion project.
Australia is constructing three AWDs based on a proven design from the Spanish Navy. When complete, the destroyers will be amongst the world’s most capable warships

Comienza construcción de destructores clase Hobart para Australia/Metal cutting begins for Australia’s Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers



La Armada de Australia, dió un gigantesco paso en Junio de 2007, cuando eligió a los diseños ganadores de sus programas navales clave: La clase Canberra LHD, un buque de operaciones anfibias, basado en el buque "Juan Carlos I", que Navantia ha construído para la Armada Españoal y la clase Hobart, destructores antiaéreos con tecnología AEGIS, basados en la fragatas F-100 de Navantia, para la Armada Española también.
Bajo el programa SEA 4000, Australia planea sustituir sus destructores de defensa aérea ya retirados con un moderno sistema, que le permita operar con la US Navy y otras marinas aliadas. Aunque la misión principal de la clase Hobart es la defensa antiaérea, tambián tiene capacidades antisubmarinas y antisuperficie.
La compañia española Navantia ganó el concurso valorado en 11.000 millones de dólares australianos, para la clase Canberra LHD y la clase Hobart, basado en sus diseños "Juan Carlos I" y la clase F-100. La entrada en servicio estaba prevista para 2013, pero esta fecha se ha retrasado a 2014-2015.

The Royal Australian Navy took a pair of giant steps in June 2007, when it selected winning designs for its keystone naval programs: Canberra Class LHD amphibious operations vessels, and Hobart Class “air warfare destroyers.”
Under the SEA 4000 Air Warfare Destroyer program, Australia plans to replace its retired air defense destroyers with a modern system that can provide significantly better protection from air attack, integrate with the US Navy and other Coalition partners, offer long-range air warfare defense for Royal Australian Navy task groups, and help provide a coordinated air picture for fighter and surveillance aircraft. Despite their name and focus, the ships are multi-role designs with a “sea control” mission that also includes advanced anti-submarine and surface warfare capabilities.
Spain’s Navantia made an A$ 11 billion clean sweep, winning both the A$ 3 billion Canberra Class LHD and the A$ 8 billion Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer contracts. The new AWD ships were scheduled to begin entering service with the Royal Australian Navy in 2013, but that date has now slipped to 2014-2015. Navantia botará la F-105 Cristóbal Colón la primera semana de noviembre de 2010

La última de las fragatas de las F-100, la F-105, que será bautizada como Cristóbal Colón,
será botada en los astilleros públicos Navantia en la primera semana del próximo mes de noviembre, según anunció el capitán de Navío Ingeniero Antonio Sánchez Godínez, jefe del programa F-100.

Armada Española y US Navy prueban sistema Aegis conjuntamente/Spanish and US naval ships test Aegis Combat System



El sistema Aegis instalado en buques de la US Navy y la Armada Española ha demostrado sus capacidades en recientes pruebas llevadas a cabo en aguas de Pt. Mugu, California. Los buques participantes han sido el USS Dewey, el USS Wayne E Meyer y la fragata española Alvaro de Bazán. El Aegis es un avanzado sistema de defensa naval utilizado por las marinas de Estados Unidos, España, Japón, Noruega y Corea del Sur, estando en evaluación con Australia.

The Aegis weapon system, installed on board the US and Spanish naval warships, has successfully exhibited its combat capabilities during a recent trial. The Combat System Ship Qualification Trials were conducted in the waters near Pt. Mugu, California last week. US Navy’s recently commissioned guided missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105) along with USS Wayne E Meyer (DDG 108) took part in the trial. Spanish Navy’s Alvaro de Bazan (F-101) frigate was also a part of the exercise.
The Aegis integrated naval weapon system, fitted on the ships, was evaluated for combat-readiness through comprehensive surface, subsurface and anti-air warfare exercises, including manned raids and electronic attack scenarios, thorough testing of the systems' tactical data link and air defense capabilities, Lockheed Martin, which is developing the system, said.
The Aegis is an advanced naval defence system installed on over 70 US Navy cruisers and destroyers. The navies of Japan, Spain, Norway and South Korea are also using the combat system. Australia is presently conducting trials of the weapon system.
