Mauritania receives CN-235 transport aircraft from UAE

The Mauritanian military announced on 13 May that it had received a transport aircraft from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The aircraft could be identified as one of the CASA/IPTN CN-235M-110 transport aircraft that the UAE acquired from Indonesia in the 1990s.
The Mauritanian military described it as a Spanish-Indonesian aircraft designed for reconnaissance, parachuting, troop and cargo transport, and medical evacuations. It also released a photograph showing a medium transport aircraft with four-blade propellers.
Airbus announced in November 2017 that the UAE Air Force and Air Defence had ordered five of its C295 transport aircraft to replace its existing CN235s.

Indonesia Press says Spanish offer of Eurofighter Typhoon is the best choice for Indonesia Air Force

Spain stressed on Wednesday that the Eurofighter Typhoon jet fighter is the best choice for Indonesia to modernize its air force when it comes to technical capabilities and the transfer-of-technologies offer.
Spanish Ambassador to Indonesia said that the Typhoon might be more expensive than its competitors, but it offers a better operational cost over the jet fighter’s life cycle of some 30 years.
The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) made it public that it wanted to replace its ageing F-5 E/F Tiger IIs with Russian-made Sukhoi Su-35s, Currently, TNI AU operates a mixed fleet of Su-27s and Su-30s in the 11th squadron.
Engines for the Flankers, however, have a very short lifetime when compared to Western-built jet fighters.
Another strong contender is the single-engine Swedish-built SAAB Gripen, while both the Flanker and Typhoon are twin-engine jet fighters.
Gripen is a good fighter, but not the best for Indonesia considering the vast airspace and maritime space to be covered.
“With the Typhoon’s range of operations, you can cover the entire Indonesian air space".
Ambassador said the cooperation started between PT Industri Pesawat Terbang Nurtanio (IPTN) and Construcciones Aeronauticas Sociedad Anonima (CASA) in the 1970s to build the C-212 Aviocar light transport aircraft. The aircraft is licence-built and was given the designation NC-212 in Indonesia. Now the production of this type is located solely in Bandung as the Spaniards are focusing on bigger aircraft types.
PT IPTN is now known as PT Dirgantara Indonesia, while CASA is now part of Airbus Defense and Space.

Portugal sells surplus C212s to Uruguay

Portugal is to transfer to Uruguay two C212-300 Patrullero maritime surveillance aircraft formerly in service with the Portuguese Air Force (FAP). A contract for the transfer was signed in Lisbon on 18 December between Portuguese Secretary of State for National Defence, and her Uruguayan counterpart.
The contract signature follows a letter of intent issued on 24 July after Uruguay had expressed an interest in buying the aircraft in late 2013.
Both aircraft will be delivered to the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU) during the summer of 2015. The package includes spares, documentation, as well as maintenance services by the FAP, such as structural and systems inspections and associated testing. The fleet will be delivered in "as is" condition to Uruguay with the nose radar installed.
The two C212-300s will join three C212-200 Aviocar transports and a single C212-200MP maritime patrol aircraft currently in service with the FAU's No 3 Air Squadron at Carrasco.
Portugal officially withdrew the aircraft from service in December 2011, having received them in March 1994 from Spain's Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA (CASA), now part of Airbus Defence & Space. The aircraft were used in search and rescue tasks and as part of the country's maritime surveillance system.
This is the second transfer of surplus Portuguese platforms to Uruguay after the Portuguese Navy frigates NRP João Belo (F480) and NRP Sacadura Cabral (F483), along with Mk 44 torpedoes, were transferred to the Uruguayan Navy in April 2008 as part of a March 2008 deal worth EUR13 million.

Repairs needed for Coast Guard HC-144A aircraft engine

The U.S. Coast Guard currently operates 13 HC-144A maritime patrol aircraft, each powered by two CT7-9C3 turboprop engine power units. The aircraft is manufactured by Airbus Military in Spain, and the CT7-9C3 turboprop engine power units are provided by General Electric Corp. (GE) in Lynn, Mass.

These aircraft are procured under the authority of the Coast Guard Aviation Program Management Office. While the base CASA CN-235-300M aircraft provides the foundation for the Coast Guard HC-144A, changes to base aircraft configuration and the addition of supplementary systems have been combined resulting in a CG01 version of the CN-235-300M.

“The end state for the fleet size is still under review but could include as many as 36 assets,” the Coast Guard said in contract documents released through the Federal Business Opportunities website on Thursday. “The projected number of Coast Guard assets over the next five years includes up to 20 operational HC-144A aircraft, with each averaging 1,200-flight hours annually.”

The HC-144A aircraft supports Coast Guard search and rescue missions, as well as surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

On April 14, 2012, during a night flight, the Coast Guard crew of aircraft 2310 reported their #1 engine chip light illuminated 5.3 hours into flight. The aircraft returned to its home station and the engines were secured.

The CT7-9C3 engine power units were inspected by Coast Guard personnel in accordance with the original equipment manufacturer periodic requirements and in conjunction with the Coast Guard specialized Asset Computerized Maintenance System. The #1 CT7-9C3 turboprop engine power unit chip detector had a small amount of carbon and one relatively large silver ferrous metal chip, approximately 5/32” in length by 1/16" in width. It was concluded that the #1 CT7-9C3 turboprop engine power unit has out of limits chip.

The Coast Guard intends to negotiate and award a contract to GE for the engine repairs. The anticipated award date is May 19, “however this is an estimate and not an exact date,” the Coast Guard said.

NEURON completes maiden flight

Europe's stealthy NEURON unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) completed its maiden flight Dec. 1 from the Istres test center in southern France, marking a major milestone for the technology demonstration project and paving the way for flight test campaigns in Italy, Sweden and France.

Led by the French defense armaments agency DGA and Dassault Aviation, nEUROn's objective is to demonstrate both the airworthiness of a stealthy combat air vehicle and the ability to develop, build and flight-test the UCAV in a relatively limited €400-million ($500-million) budget working across six countries with multiple industrial partners.

Launched by DGA in 2006, nEUROn involves the governments of France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Greece and Switzerland. In addition to prime contractor Dassault, the program pools the skills and know-how of Alenia Aermacchi, Saab, EADS-CASA, Helenic Aerospace Industry, Ruag and Thales.

Powered by a Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Adour engine, the 10-meter-long nEUROn features a wingspan of 12.5 meters and a dry mass of 5,000 kg. The project is designed to address a number of technological challenges, including the aircraft's capacity to carry and deliver weapons from an internal bay. Today, European aircraft are designed with external loading capabilities for bombs and missiles.

Other technological objectives include development of the air vehicle and its innovative composite structure, demonstration of low-observability technologies, use of high-level algorithms for automated processes and
testing the human factor within the mission loop.

“Through these demonstration missions, the goals are to validate technologies around command and control of an unmanned air vehicle of a size similar to a combat aircraft, with all back-up modes insuring necessary safety and security,” Dassault said in a Dec. 1 statement.

The vehicle will continue flight tests in France before moving to operational trials in Sweden in 2014. Additional weapons firing and stealth capability assessments will will take place at the Perdadesfogu range in Italy.

In addition to technology development, nEUROn is designed to demonstrate a leaner decision-making process that aims to eliminate the complexities that have plagued other international collaborations, such as the Eurofighter
Typhoon, where decision-making has been complicated by the large number of companies and government procurement agencies involved. For nEUROn, Dassault coordinates industrial interests and interacts with DGA as the lead armaments agency, which coordinates the governments' collective position.

Dassault's work on nEUROn includes responsibility for integration and the flight control system. Italy's Alenia is producing the “smart” internal weapons bay with an electro-optical/infrared sensor and Saab of Sweden has
built the central and forward fuselage and is working on other components.

EADS-CASA of Spain built the wings and is involved with data-link integration and the ground station, while Hellenic Aerospace Industry is working on the rear fuselage and exhaust duct and Ruag is developing the weapon interface linking the aircraft system to the armaments.
