The Indian air force's third Ilyushin Il-76-based airborne early warning and control aircraft has undergone flight tests equipped with additional systems.
The aircraft was tested during long-duration flights over Israel and the Mediterranean from Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport, and included "some very complex scenarios", according to one source. Indian air force personnel were aboard the platform for all the sorties.
India requested unspecified additional capabilities for its third Il-76 AEW&C aircraft after taking delivery of its first two examples from Israel Aerospace Industries' Elta Systems subsidiary.

The US Air Force is to use the QF-4 Phantom for banner tow missions to ensure combat fighter aircrews could continue training and developing their aerial gunnery skills. Due to costs, the Navy contract for use of Lear jets was being cut, and this is the way to accomplish with this training. Based at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, the QF-4s are used by the 82nd ATRS as aerial target drones, usually flown unmanned and often destroyed in live fire exercises.
All sorties are conducted over water, far from shore.

The restrictions were imposed following pressure from the US administration, which has outlined its concerns to Israel several times in the past two years.

A businessman from Hong Kong has offered to pay £5m for the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible and tow the ship to China’s Zhuhai city to convert the ship into an international school.
He is expecting to spend another £6m to tow it to China and convert the ship.
He added that his intentions are purely commercial and has nothing to do with the Chinese military.

Maniobras navales entre India y Francia/ Largest Indo-French Naval Exercise

Las maniobras navales Varuna 2011, entre Francia e India han comenzado en el Índico. Participan nueve buques, incluyendo dos portaaviones: INS Viraat (con Sea Harrier and Seaking) y el Charles de De Gaulle (con Rafale, E2C, Rafale y Super Etendard).
Otros buques son las fragatas INS Godavari,INS Ganga, el submarino INS Shalki, y por parte de Francia los destructores Forbin y Tourville, el petrolero Meuse y el submarino nuclear Améthyste.

Exercise Varuna 2011, starting tomorrow in the Arabian Sea off Goa, is a major part of the French Navy's Agapanthe 2010 deployment. This bilateral exercise will involve nine ships, including two aircraft carriers: INS Viraat (with Sea Harriers and Seaking) and FS Charles De Gaulle (strike group composed of E2C, Rafale and SEM).
The 7 other units are the following: Indian frigates INS Godavari and INS Ganga, Class-209 submarine INS Shalki, French destroyers FS Forbin and FS Tourville, fleet tanker FS Meuse and nuclear submarine FS Améthyste. Shorebased maritime patrol aircraft will also participate in the exercise.
Exercise Varuna will start with a harbour phase in Mormugao (7-10 January), followed by a phase at sea (11-14 January). The phase off Goa includes air operations, submarine exercises, surface exercises as well as replenishment at sea.

El programa F-35B se cancelará si no consigue reducir costes/F-35B gets ‘last chance’

El Secretario de Defensa de Estados Unidos, Robert Gates ha anunciado una significativa reestructuración del programa del avión de caza F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, para ahorrar 154.000 millones de dólares del presupuesto de defensa en los próximos cinco años.
Las versiones F-35A para la USAF y F-35C para la US Navy, continuarán su desarrollo según lo previsto, pero la versión de despegue y aterrizaje vertical, la F-35B, ha sido puesta bajo estudio, en aras de conseguir eficiencia en prestaciones y en coste. Si no se consigue, se cancelará, lo que afectará a los US Marines, que esperaban la primera unidad para 2012. Las expectativas de la Armada Española también podrían verse afectadas.
Para paliar los retrasos y el posible vacío, se está autorizando la modernización de la flota de F-15C/D Eagle, y se autorizará la compra de másF/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced a significant restructuring of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme in an effort to save $154 billion in efficiencies within the Department of Defense budget over the next five years.
In the shake-up, the F-35A (US Air Force) and F-35C (US Navy) variants will continue to schedule, but the F-35B Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) variant has been given a “two-year probation”, says Gates. “If we cannot fix this variant during this time frame and get it back on track in terms of performance, cost and schedule, then I believe it should be cancelled,” he confirmed. The US Marine Corps will be most affected by this decision, which was planning for an Initial Operating Capability in 2012 with the F-35B.
To combat delays in the F-35 programme, Gates is authorising an update to the US Air Force’s fleet of F-15C/D Eagles to extend its service life and is planning to buy more F/A-18E/F Super Hornets to plug the potential fighter ‘gap’ in the US Navy.
