Australian Minister for Defence Stephen Smith and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced that Chief of the Royal Australian Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, AO, CSC, RAN, has signed the project arrangement between the Australian and Spanish Navies for the deployment to Australia of the Spanish Armada Ship, SPS Cantabria from mid-February until November 2013.
The Cantabria deployment is a unique opportunity for both Navies and will strengthen the bilateral relationship between Spain and Australia.

Ecuador to spend US$125 million to modernize 2 submarines
Ecuador is investing about US$125 million to modernize two war submarines in Chilean Navy shipyards, according to the Ecuadoran Ministry of Defense.
The “Shyri” submarine was delivered by the Chilean Navy Armory and Shipyards (ASMAR) on Oct. 19 at the Talcahuano port, about 500 kilometers (310.7 miles) south of Santiago, the ministry said in a statement. Another submarine, named “Huancavilca” is undergoing the identical modernization process at ASMAR and should be ready by February 2014.

The biennial Airshow China at Zhuhai offers foreign experts and the Chinese public a rare glimpse into the development of UAVs for the Chinese military and the eventual roles that Beijing hopes such systems will fill. In 2010, models for between 40 and 50 UAVs were displayed at the show. Concepts ranged from small tactical UAVs to large, high-altitude long-endurance UAVs equipped with anti-ship missiles.
