F-15A Eagle 77-0102 ‘Spirit of Cape Cod’, retired from active US Air Force service in 2006, is to be preserved at a museum in California.
The Eagle was one of two scrambled from Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod on September 11, 2001 after the terrorist hijacking of airliners over New York city. The two aircraft were with the 101st Fighter Squadron, 102nd Fighter Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. The aircrafts patrolled over the city and gave New Yorkers a sense of reassurance.
