The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) is to retire its fleet of AT-26 Xavante fighters on December 2 after 39 years of operating the type.
A derivative of the Aermacchi MB326GC, the Xavante was the first jet produced in Brazil, being constructed by Embraer under licence from the Italian company. Used primarily as a trainer between 1974 and 2004, of the 166 produced for the FAB less than 30 are believed to be active with the two remaining units, 1º/4º GAv at Manaus and 1º GDA at Anápolis.
Ten aircraft were bought by Paraguay and six by Togo, the latter being the last operator of the type with four aircraft still serving with the Togolese Air Force at Niamtougou Airport.
