El US Army y los Marines de Estados Unidos ha iniciado las prebas del vehículo que sustituirá al Hummer, y que ofrecerá mejor protección contra artefactos explosivos y mejor movilidad. El Hummer ha sido reforzado para soportar explosiones de coches bomba y minas, para adecuarse a los campos de batalla de Afganistán e Iraq. Este peso añadido, ha provocado la reducción en la potencia y fiabilidad del vehículo.
El US Army quiere unas 60.000 unidades, los Marines unas 5.500.

The Army and Marine Corps have begun testing competing industry designs for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, a new lightweight replacement for the venerable Humvee that will offer better protection against IEDs and better off-road mobility.
The Humvee was never intended to carry all the additional armor that was slapped on it as troops fought on IED strewn battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan; the vehicle’s performance and reliability suffered as the engine and suspension sagged under the added weight.
